At the foundation, the SmartNFT protocol introduces an advanced data structure for tokens, significantly expanding upon the limited metadata capabilities of standard NFTs like ERC-721 tokens. This data layer allows for the storage of token data in a more expressive manner, enabling the inclusion of a wide range of attributes and properties that define the token's characteristics and capabilities. Mandatory data fields define the essential attributes of the token, such as its transferability, whether it can be geolocated, its redeem-ability, associated prices, and other fundamental properties. The custom data section goes beyond the mandatory fields tailored to specific use cases. This could include any additional properties, parameters, or data relevant to the token, such as user interactions, rewards earned, and content to be displayed as part of the token's functionality.

Providing a robust framework for defining and executing interactions with SmartNFTs, the Transaction Layer allows creators to specify what actions are permissible with a token and how these actions are to be performed. This layer introduces composable Actions and Reactors: Configurable elements that define the logic for token interactions, such as transfers, redemptions, engagement based state-updates or geolocation-based actions. Creators can set up rules and conditions for these interactions, making the SmartNFT highly adaptable to various use cases. Beyond the built-in actions, the protocol allows for the creation of custom functions or reactors, enabling developers to innovate and create unique interactions for their SmartNFTs.

An innovative aspect of the SmartNFT protocol is the ability to create an autonomous logic for each token, which can be thought of as the "brain" of the SmartNFT. This allows for the programming of self-contained logic that can modify the token's behavior or state based on certain conditions or patterns. Examples include tokens that autonomously move across geolocations or change their properties over time.

The SmartNFT protocol is designed to be blockchain agnostic, meaning it can interface with various blockchain technologies. Ownership and authenticity of the SmartNFT can be minted recorded on any supported blockchain such as Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, Casper, Binance, etc. or the dedicated SmartNFT chain. This layer ensures interoperability and flexibility in selecting the underlying blockchain technology based on the project's needs und use-case.

This layer focuses on the end-user experience by allowing for the creation of interactive, dynamic visual representations of a SmartNFT. Creators can develop micro “web-app like” dynamic user interfaces for each token, where users can engage with the SmartNFT through interactive elements like buttons, videos, and games embedded within the token's interface. To complete the architecture, an open-source Web SDK enabling the development of user-friendly wallet web-apps to interact with the SmartNFTs, abstracting away the complexity of the backend systems and providing a simple, engaging experience for end-users.
